The Actor's Way
A Journey of Self-discovery in Letters
By (author) Benjamin Lloyd
Actor's Way by Benjamin Lloyd
Book DescriptionThis is required reading for anyone passionate about the theatre and acting, and the teaching of it. The struggles of a young actor, the actor/director relationship, the challenges and pitfalls of teaching art in universities, ageism and issues of concern to the elderly, and techniques for teaching realistic acting are all communicated through a fictional series of letters between Andy, an anguished young New York City actor and Alice, his Quaker grade-school acting teacher. Over time they become reconnected, and end up working together on an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in a workshop meant to help acting teachers become more focused and skilled. Through their reconnection, Andy - and the reader - learns about the link between the life of the spirit and the life of the actor, and Alice is drawn out of seclusion to perform again. This compelling story of two lonely artists who motivate each other across a divide of years through their correspondence will inspire actors, teachers of acting, and other readers. This is a new and thoroughly modern re-examination of Stanislavksy's popular text "An Actor Prepares" with a focus on his use of spirituality. However, "The Actor's Way" is written as a fictional exchange and Stanislavksy's text is nonfiction.
