Promised Land by Erich Maria Remarque Promised Land, Paperback (February 2016)

From the detention centre on Ellis Island, Ludwig Somner looks across a small stretch of water to the glittering towers of New York, which whisper seductively of freedom after so many years of wandering through a perlious, suffering Europe. This book tells the stories of the precarious life of the refugee.

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque All Quiet on the Western Front, Hardback (October 2013)

We've lost any desire to conquer the world. We are refugees. We are fleeing from ourselves. From our lives. We were eighteen and had begun to love the world and to love being in it; but we had to shoot at it. The first shell to land went straight for our hearts. We've been cut of from real action, from getting on, from progress.

Book Review: All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque - Reviewed by (10 Jun 2011)

This book changed my views on war and war heroes. The cruelty and horror experienced by Paul and his fellow soldiers are just unimaginable; un-transmissible except by someone who has been there. Before the war Paul is a sensitive boy who writes poetry and has a deep inner life. The war erases this. He feels hopeless and unable to communicate his experiences to his family and friends.

As war destroys lives around him, Paul chronicles it all with helplessness. Remarkable characters, and camaraderie in the face of senseless, baffling deaths.

On leave from the front, Paul comes back to visit his family, knowing he will have to return again to the war. His community's incapacity to understand his experience is heartbreaking and crazymaking.

This book is a masterpiece. Everyone should read it, and have their heart broken a little by it!
