Annette Messager by Catherine Grenier

Book Description

Annette Messager is an artist with a mission, as she puts it, to "make life more interesting than art." One of France's leading contemporary artists, and well-known to American art lovers from her show at the MoMA, New York, in 1995, her inventive and wide-ranging style has won her admirers all over the world, and she has shown her work in such diverse places as New Delhi, Berlin, Japan, and Vancouver, as well as all over France. Her work is at once intimate and universal, using familiar objects (toys, fishing nets, gloves) in a wryly challenging manner that leads us to look at our cosy world with fresh eyes. Her creations are characterized by their generosity and human frailty. The aim of this monograph is to introduce the work of Annette Messager to a wider public. The author has worked closely with the artist to produce a visually stunning work that provides a clear picture of the creative development of a major contemporary artist, covering the period from the early seventies to the present day. Fully illustrated and with highly detailed and researched text - including Messager's biography and list of exhibitions as well as examinations of the significance of individual works - Annette Messager is a must-read for anyone interested in current artistic developments in Europe.
