Art of Clothing: A Pacific Experience by Susanne Kuchler
Book DescriptionThe Art of Clothing: A Pacific Experience is a collection of richly textured and tremendously engaging empirical studies of cloth and clothing in colonial and post-colonial Pacific contexts. By challenging readers to reconsider the very nature of the materiality of clothing, the editors productively situate this volume at the intersection of a number of ongoing interdisciplinary projects that are coalescing around an interest in cloth and clothing. The book as a whole speaks lucidly to issues of current concern in a wide range of academic fields - including cultural studies, material culture, Pacific history, art history, history of religions, and museum studies.

Pacific Pattern, Hardback (September 2005)
Lavishly illustrated throughout with a rare combination of contemporary, archival and museum images, Pacific Pattern takes us on a spectacular journey through the history of the Pacific and the myriad ways in which its peoples weave, bind, knit, plait, rub and stamp patterns of astonishing creativity.
Clothing as Material Culture, Hardback (March 2005)
Social scientists, though interested in fashion theories, have rarely addressed the material qualities of clothing. In contrast, traditional studies of dress have focused on textiles but neglect the context within which dress becomes consumed as clothing. This book aims to combine these two 'camps' through a material culture approach to clothing.

Malanggan are "death" figures found in the Pacific which continue to confound anthropologists, they are intended to decompose as symbolic representations of the dead. This work interprets these mysterious agents of resemblance and connection as having a cognitive rather than linguistic basis.
