Atlantic by Paul Butel
Book DescriptionFrom Antiquity to modern times, the Atlantic has been the subject of myths and legends. The Atlantic by Paul Butel offers a global history of the ocean encompassing the exploits of adventurers, Vikings, explorers such as Christopher Columbus, emigrants, fishermen, and modern traders. The book also highlights the importance of the growth of ports such as New York and Liverpool and the battles of the Atlantic in the world wars of the twentieth century. The author offers an examination of the legends of the ocean, beginning with the Phoenicians and Carthaginians navigating beyong the Pillars of Hercules, and details the exploitation and power struggles of the Atlantic through the centuries. The book surveys the important events in the Atlantic's rich history and comprehensively analyses the changing fortunes of sea-going nations, including Britain, the United States and Germany.

UK Kirkus Review » In this, the first title to appear in a novel series on Seas in History, Professor Butel gives an interesting account of the importance of the Atlantic Ocean over the past two millennia. He begins with the mythical status which the Atlantic had in Greek and Roman civilizations, and proceeds to discuss its significance for the Vikings. Most of the book is taken up with the great voyages of discovery between the 15th and the 18th centuries. He adds a new dimension to the history of the West in the early modern period by looking at it in terms of its navigation and exploitation of this ocean. He charts the Atlantic trade of Britain and America in particular during the Victorian period, the role of this sea in the two world wars, and finally the emergence of the pleasure cruise in the late-20th century. It is fascinating to look at the past in terms of water rather than land. (Kirkus UK)
