Bear is an impulsive dreamer, while Chook is much more cautious, and happier with normal routine. When Bear wakes up with an urge to visit the sea, feeling the holiday breeze, Chook isn’t as keen, but follows anyway. Emma Quay’s delightful illustrations will captivate the reader. The expressions on the characters’ faces wonderfully capture the personalities of these unlikely friends. From the exuberant joy of the cover illustration to the closing comfort of warm honey toast, the pictures compare a normal routine of cosy beds to the excitement of exploring rock pools. The reader is instantly engaged. Lisa Shanahan’s text almost doesn’t require illustrations, with the characters flomping and scratching along on their journey to the sea. Her word choices are descriptive and easy to enjoy. The littlies will easily identify with the adventures a day at the beach can bring. They will also relate to the loss of confidence that getting dumped by a wave can cause. When Bear comes off second best against a wave, dear little Chook provides the solace and comfort of a caring friend, until Bear’s equilibrium is restored. A simple tale of friendship and adventure, this book will enchant readers of all ages.
