Ben Jonson, 'Volpone'and the Gunpowder Plot by Richard Dutton
Book DescriptionBen Jonson's Volpone is the most widely taught and commonly performed English Renaissance play outside of Shakespeare. However, the dramatic circumstances of its writing are little known. Jonson wrote the play very shortly after the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, an event in which he was personally involved. This book argues that the play alludes to the plot as openly as censorship will allow, using the traditional form of the beast fable. As a Roman Catholic himself, Jonson shared in the repression suffered by his co-religionists in the wake of the Plot, and the play fiercely satirizes the man they chiefly blamed for this, Robert Cecil. The elaborate format which Jonson devised for the 1607 edition of Volpone, with a dedication, Epistle and numerous commendatory poems, is reproduced here photographically, allowing the reader to appreciate Jonson's covert meanings and to approach the text as those in 1607 might have done.

Troublesome Reign of John, King of England, Paperback (June 2016)
A much needed, fully annotated and modernized text of a long neglected play used by Shakespeare as the principal basis of King John. Published anonymously in 1591, it can now be attributed definitively to Peele and ranks as the most important Elizabethan history play after Shakespeare and Marlowe's Edward II.
Shakespeare, Court Dramatist, Hardback (April 2016)
Shakespeare, Court Dramatist outlines the symbiotic relationship between Shakespeare and the court and shows how it affected his writing, forging plays like Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet into the versions we know best today.
Lady's Trial, Paperback (September 2015)
The first scholarly edition of a little-known play by a major Renaissance playwright, which interestingly reworks Othello.
Love's Metamorphosis, Paperback (June 2015)» View all books by Richard Dutton
Lyly's most elegantly structured play, newly edited from the quarto of 1601
