Best of Britain: Devon by Simon Heptinstall
Book DescriptionMany Brits are discovering the joys of holidaying on home soil, and Devon offers the best of Britain in one county. The council is also championing sustainable tourism to combat global warming and there are more green businesses and organic food producers here than anywhere in the UK. This unique guide is a valuable source of local information, to help visitors get the most out of the area in the time you have; be it a two-week holiday, short break or long weekend. Throughout the book, local people give their recommendations on where to find the best fish and chips, bike ride or secret path to a spectacular view, uncovering the Best of Britain. This guide includes practical information on a range of accommodation, the best places to eat, local festivals, events and activities as well as informing readers about the history, geology and culture of the area, with a 'local heroes' section of famous residents past and present. Informative maps are found throughout the book, including walking and climbing routes and children's activities in the area. The book focuses on what makes this part of the south of England so special: from rolling countryside, picturesque villages with thatched cottages and majestic rivers such as the Torridge and Exe, to attractive fishing villages, thriving port towns and stunning beaches.

Author Biography - Simon Heptinstall
When former taxi-driver and garage-manager Simon Heptinstall switched to journalism he was soon described by Private Eye as a miserable little squirt. Luckily he's grown a bit since then and cheered up slightly, so only the squirt part applies. Simon grew up in Devon, went to school there, was in terrible, terrible band that played all over the county, trained as a cider-maker, worked for the county council before going away to university. He came back to be editor of the Cornish and Devon Post newspaper and be a member of the trust that owns one of the county's professional football teams. Simon's award-winning travel writing appears regularly in the Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday, Daily Telegraph and Evening Standard.
