Better Together by Robert D. Putnam

Book Description

For his new book Robert Putnam visited a number of places across America where individuals and groups are engaged in unusual forms of social activism and civic renewal. These are people who are renewing their communities and investing in new forms of 'social capital.' Approximately a dozen such stories of civic innovation are told in this book. They range from a mentoring and reading programme in Philadelphia that brings together retirees and primary school children to a revitalised neighbourhood association and revitalised neighbourhoods in Boston to a successful community organising effort in the impoverished Rio Grande Valley. All across America and the UK such organizations are starting up and thriving, giving hope that the message of BOWLING ALONE has reached people and that civic institutions are taking new forms to adapt to new times and new needs.

Our Kids by Robert D. Putnam Our Kids, Paperback (April 2016)

New York Times bestseller and examination of the growing inequality gap from the bestselling author of Bowling Alone.

Age of Obama by Robert D. Putnam Age of Obama, Paperback (March 2010)

As the world marvelled at a black family moving into the White House, arguments raged over whether America's race relations had truly been transformed. This book looks at the hard facts of life for minorities on both side of the Atlantic, providing an illuminating comparative picture of diversity.

Democracies in Flux by Robert D. Putnam Democracies in Flux, Paperback (February 2004)

Social capital--good will, fellowship, sympathy, and social intercourse--is vitally important for the health of communities. In his new work, the author of "Bowling Alone" presents a panoramic look at the strength of civil society in eight advanced democracies. 50 line illustrations.

Disaffected Democracies by Robert D. Putnam Disaffected Democracies, Paperback (May 2000)

A culmination of various research projects, this collection of papers presents data that allows direct comparisons across national borders and detailed pictures of trends within countries. It shows that citizen disaffection in the Trilateral democracies is not the result of frayed social fabric, the end of the Cold War, or public cynicism.
