Body in Mind by Mark Rowlands

Book Description

In this book, Mark Rowlands challenges the Cartesian view of the mind as a self-contained monadic entity, and offers in its place a radical externalist or environmentalist model of cognitive processes. Cognition is not something done exclusively in the head, but fundamentally something done in the world. Drawing on both evolutionary theory and a detailed examination of the processes involved in perception, memory, thought and language use, Rowlands argues that cognition is, in part, a process whereby creatures manipulate and exploit relevant objects in their environment. It is not simply an internal process of information processing; equally significantly, it is an external process of information processing. This innovative book provides a foundation for an unorthodox but increasingly popular view of the nature of cognition.

Memory and the Self by Mark Rowlands Memory and the Self, Hardback (December 2016)

Our memories, many believe, make us who we are. But most of our experiences have been forgotten, and the memories that remain are often wildly inaccurate. How, then, can memories play this person-making role? The answer lies in a largely unrecognized type of memory: Rilkean memory.

Good Life by Mark Rowlands Good Life, Paperback (October 2016)

From the bestselling author of The Philosopher and the Wolf comes a gripping and provocative story of one man's life through a philosophical lens

Can Animals be Moral? by Mark Rowlands Can Animals be Moral?, Paperback (April 2015)

Can animals act morally? Philosophical tradition answers "no," and has apparently convincing arguments on its side. Cognitive ethology supplies a growing body of empirical evidence that suggests these arguments are wrong.

Running with the Pack by Mark Rowlands Running with the Pack, Paperback (December 2014)

Mark Rowlands explores the intimate relationship between running and philosophy in this brilliant and inspiring follow-up to The Philosopher and the Wolf
