Bones of Faerie by Janni Lee Simner

Book Description

The war between humanity and Faerie devastated both sides. Or so 15-year-old Liza has been told. Nothing has been seen or heard from Faerie since, and Liza s world bears the scars of its encounter with magic. Trees move with sinister intention, and the town Liza calls home is surrounded by a forest that threatens to harm all those who wander into it. Then Liza discovers she has the Faerie ability to see into the past, into the future and she has no choice but to flee her town. Liza s quest will take her into Faerie and back again, and what she finds along the way may be the key to healing both worlds. Janni Lee Simner s first novel for young adults is a dark fairy-tale twist on apocalyptic fiction as familiar as a nightmare, yet altogether unique. "From the Hardcover edition.""

Book Review: Bones of Faerie by Janni Lee Simner - Reviewed by (24 Jan 2010)

Bones of Faerie is a very short read, at just over two hundred and fifty pages. I believe that another fifty pages at least could have been added to show character development. I felt that while the story was entertaining it lacked the depth needed to make it truly enjoyable.

The characters were two dimensional. You don't get to hear enough about them (their feelings, the thoughts behind their actions) to make you feel for them. Liza, being the main character, is the one we do find out the most about. I did find the way she looked back on her father to be horribly realistic - even though he was extremely cruel to her and beat her often; she thought about him with a certain fondness. On the other hand, to me the characters of Mathew, Allie, Caleb and Tara fell flat.

The romance in this book was pretty much non-existent. I don't think that all books need romance, but Bones of Faerie seemed to set everything up between Liza and...
