A photographic history of Britain and Ireland's greatest castles.
UK Kirkus Review » Rodney Castleden's book on Britain's Neolithic ancestry is centred upon the year 3000 BC, and everyday lifestyles from the cradle to the cairn. In his analysis, around this date, there was a fundamental change in tribal structures. For instance, the idea of rank and an increasingly priestly style of religious 'wise man' begin to undermine the certainties of a former egalitarian network. Penelope Lively's preface adds literary weight to his notion, acknowledging that Castleden is out to demystify and reinterpret recent archaeological discoveries alongside previous historical claims; even the author himself builds upon his other work on prehistoric times, such as The Making of Stonehenge (1993). Occasionally, the text lies inside borders to highlight secondary issues and avoid any digression. Also, the use of maps, photographs, time lines and other diagrams readily identify with the adjacent text. Therefore, overall, this book is both pleasing to the eye as well as being thought-provoking. (Kirkus UK)
