Description
Winner of the Davitt Award - Crime Fiction Novel of the Year 2006 In November 1974 a young English nanny named Sandra Rivett was murdered in London's West End. Her employer, Lord Lucan, was named as her attacker. It was widely assumed he had mistaken her for his wife. Lord Lucan disappeared the night Sandra Rivett died and has never been seen since. Henry Kennedy lives on a mountain on the other side of the world. He is not who he says he is. Is he a murderer or a man who can never clear his name? And is he the only one with something to hide? Set in Tasmania, Africa and London's Belgravia, The Butterfly Man is an absorbing novel about transformation and deception, and the lengths to which we will go to protect the ones we love.

Henry Kennedy—house-builder, boat-builder and lover of Lili—is dying. As his end draws near his doctor warns him that he may get confused, he may say things unconsciously or call people close to him by the wrong names. This would be confronting enough for anyone, but it fills Henry with horror, because he is keeping a secret that cannot be revealed—he is actually the infamous Lord Lucan. In 1974 Lucan fled London, accused of the murder of his children’s nanny and the attempted murder of his wife. As Henry recalls Lucan’s flight across Africa and eventually to Tasmania, shedding his aristocratic persona along the way and becoming the rough-and-ready Henry, the reader is invited to sympathise with a desperate man. And just as he seems to have attained peace, building a beautiful house outside Hobart and sharing it with his partner Lili, the tragedies of her past and his begin to surface. Peopled with believable characters and written in an engagingly ‘literary’ tone (that is only rarely bordering on the overwritten), I found The Butterfly Man to be an impressive novel—a very pleasant, 300-page way to spend a Sunday.
