Cambridge Ancient History by Averil Cameron
Book DescriptionWith Volume 14 The Cambridge Ancient History concludes its story. This latest volume embraces the wide range of approaches and scholarship which have in recent decades transformed our view of Late Antiquity. In particular, traditional political and social history has been enormously enhanced by integrating the rich evidence of Christian writing, and the constantly expanding results of archaeological research. A picture emerges of a period of considerable military and political disruption, but also of vibrant intellectual and cultural activity. The volume begins with a series of narrative chapters. These are followed by sections on government and institutions, economy and society, and religion and culture. A section on the provinces and the non-Roman world marks the rise of new and distinct political and cultural entities. This volume, and the CAH, ends in around AD 600, before the Arab conquests shattered for ever what remained of the unity of the Roman world.

Dialoguing in Late Antiquity, Paperback (May 2014)
Averil Cameron refutes an argument by some scholars that Christians did not dialogue after a wall of silence came down in the fifth century AD. Cameron shows that in late antiquity and throughout Byzantium Christians debated and wrote philosophical, literary, and theological dialogues, and she makes a case for their centrality in Greek literature.
Byzantine Matters, Hardback (May 2014)
For many of us, Byzantium remains "byzantine" - obscure, marginal, difficult. This book presents an original and personal view of the challenges and questions facing historians of Byzantium today.
Mediterranean World in Late Antiquity, Hardback (September 2011)

By focusing on a single year not overshadowed by an epochal event, this title provides a fresh look at Mediterranean civilization in the midst of enormous change - as Christianity takes hold in rural areas across the empire, as western Roman provinces fall away from those in the Byzantine east, and as power shifts from Rome to Constantinople.
