Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs by Giles Andreae
Book DescriptionGiles Andreae and Russell Ayto's super-fun Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs Flinn is at school looking in the art cupboard for some coloured pens to finish off his dinosaur drawing when he stumbles upon Captain Stubble, a real live Pirate Captain! He tells Flinn that his ship, the Acorn, has been stolen and that he needs Flinn to help him rescue it back. Stubble makes Flinn the captain and they sail away on an old pirate ship...they finally find the Acorn but, to their horror, realise it's been stolen by PIRATE DINOSAURS! Captain Flinn and his crew attack the dinosaurs and, after much fighting, seize control of the ship once more. Flinn and his friends then sail back to the harbour clambering through the boatshed door and back into the art cupboard without the teacher even noticing they've been gone! Giles Andreae is an award-winning children's author and has written both fiction titles and best-selling picture books. His picture book, The Lion Who Wanted to Dance, won The Federation of Children's Book Award in the best picture book category in 1998. However, he is probably most famous as the creator of the phenomenally successful Purple Ronnie, Britain's favourite stickman. Giles lives in Notting Hill with his wife and three young children. Russell has illustrated books by prolific children's authors such as Ian Whybrow and Cressida Cowell. The Witch's Children was shortlisted for the Greenaway last year and this year The Witch's Children and the Queen is on the Smarties shortlist. Russell lives in Penzance, Cornwall. US Kirkus Review » The creators of Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs (2005) again chuck lots of promising elements together - evidently in hopes that they'll assemble themselves into an exciting, or at least coherent, yarn. They don't. Shortly after pausing in awe before the huge skeleton of a Giganotosaurus on a class trip to the museum, Flinn and friends fall through a wardrobe - er, closet and find themselves aboard a ship heading for Bag O' Bones Island, where they fight scaly pirates to recover a treasure stolen from the aforementioned museum. Enter Giganotosaurus at the climax, as a towering pirate who hardly gets to roar before he's reduced to jelly by the sight of a tiny spider. Ayto illustrates the sketchy plot with frenzied cartoon collages featuring lots of big teeth, jumbled action and a ship that looks like a fugitive from a Monty Python animation. Young readers will give this a perfunctory once-over at best; set them instead on a course for the more seaworthy likes of Deb Lund's Dinosailors (2003), illustrated by Howard Fine. Book Review: Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs by Giles Andreae - Reviewed by Sheepcoate (10 Nov 2013)
Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs comes from a series of popular books staring the adventures of Captain Flinn.
The story really opens up a childs imagination. Flinn a normal every day boy somehow finds himself transported into a magical kingdom where dinosaurs are pirates. When Flinn discovers a pirates hiding in his cupboard he follows him through to try and save the pirates ship 'acrorn' which has been stolen by the T-rex and his pirate dinosaurs.
Once again the illustrations are quite unique and distinctive as what you would expect from the series. A recommended book one of adventures at the high seas.
