Che's Chevrolet, Fidel's Oldsmobile by Richard Schweid

Book Description

This title presents a car-centered history of life on the island. Vintage U.S.-made cars on the streets of Havana provide a common representation of Cuba. Journalist Richard Schweid, who traveled throughout the island to research the story of motor vehicles in Cuba today and yesterday, gets behind the wheel and behind the stereotype in this colorful chronicle of cars, buses, and trucks. In his captivating, sometimes gritty voice, Schweid blends previously untapped historical sources with his personal experiences, spinning a car-centered history of life on the island over the past century. The narrative is complemented by fifty-two historic black-and-white photographs and eight color photographs by contemporary Cuban photographer Adalberto Roque.

Books By Author Richard Schweid

Invisible Nation by Richard Schweid Invisible Nation, Paperback (November 2016)

Based on in-depth reporting from five major cities, this book looks backward at the historical context of family homelessness, as well as forward at what needs to be done to alleviate this widespread, although often hidden, poverty. It is suitable for anyone who wants to know what is happening to the millions of families living in poverty.

Cockroach Papers by Richard Schweid Cockroach Papers, Paperback (June 2015)

Skittering figures of urban legend - and a ubiquitous reality - cockroaches are nearly as abhorred as they are ancient. This book shows that, while some species of these evolutionary superstars do indeed plague our kitchens and restaurants, exacerbate our asthma, and carry disease, our belief in their total villainy is ultimately misplaced.

Octopus by Richard Schweid Octopus, Paperback (October 2013)

Octopus documents the long and multi-faceted relationship between human and cephalopod. The book relates both what is known and unknown about the mind of an octopus, as well as detailing the animal's remarkable natural and cultural history.

Eel by Richard Schweid Eel, Paperback (May 2009)

Although it might seem the most mundane of fish when pulled from the mud of creeks, ponds, rivers or the sea, the eel's life cycle is one of the most remarkable on the planet. The author chronicles these creatures in all their aspects: their natural history to their market value; their occurence in art and literature; and their threatened status.
