Chocolate a Day by John F. Ashton

Book Description

Did you know that chocolate is better for you than red wine? That is does not contribute to weight gain (unless eaten in excess) and has great health benefits? Latest scientific research has shown that chocolate is high in anti-oxidants, which helps to protect our cells against damage and ageing. This book takes a positive and light-hearted look at chocolate, so often considered the 'forbidden food', telling you how to identify which types of chocolate are good for you and how to stop before you have had too much! Written by two respected food researchers, the book combines accurate information about chocolate with a fun approach - great news for all chocoholics - chocolate is good for you and this book explains why.

Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » A chocolate a day keeps the doctor away? Surely some mistake. The title sounds like the type of wish-fulfilment that will gladden hearts worldwide. The price tag may feel rather steep for this slim, non-illustrated volume, but it may be worth every penny in vindication alone. Food research scientist and university lecturer John Ashton and his daughter-in-law, a nutritionist, have set out to prove that the truism that a little bit of what you fancy does you good is particularly applicable when it comes to chocolate. But before you start stocking up on Mississippi Mud Cake and Mars bars, it would pay to remember that not all chocolates are created equal, and that the real health benefits of chocolate come from the nutritional qualities of the cacao, the raw material for chocolate, so a small piece of the fine dark stuff is going to be better for you than varieties that have been adulterated with sugar and fat. Once the Ashtons had trotted out such facts as the quantities of health-giving substances contained in chocolate such as potassium, iron, magnesium and antioxidants, and compared the calorie, fat and nutrient values of a couple of squares of chocolate with those of a rich dessert or cream cake, it's hard not to be convinced. Add in the anti-depressant qualities of cacao, supported by the fact that the Aztecs used it almost as a ritual drug, not to mention the sheer enjoyment factor gained from indulging in a few quality chocolates, and any sense of guilt should just fly out of the window.
