Historical Guide to Henry James, Hardback (February 2012)
An excellent primer to the work and milieu of Henry James, this collection of essays highlights the historical and cultural issues that influenced the great novelist.
Post-Nationalist American Studies, Paperback (November 2000)
Seeks to revise the cultural nationalism and celebratory American exceptionalism that tended to dominate American Studies in the Cold War era. This work deals with cross-cultural communication, race and gender, global and local identities, and the complex tensions between symbolic and political economies.
Literary Culture and US Imperialism, Hardback (August 2000)
Rowe offers a sweeping re-assessment of American imperialism, arguing that the growing nation was driven primarily by a quest for marketers, rather than for land.
At Emerson's Tomb, Paperback (December 1996)» View all books by John Carlos Rowe
Challenges the conventional critical reading of the American poetic project as an engagement with or reaction against Emersonian thought. Rowe demonstrates how ideals of individualism, intellectualism, and otherworldiness inevitably undermine any political effectiveness that a writer may seek to achieve.
