Country and the City Revisited by Gerald MacLean
Book DescriptionBetween 1550 and 1850, the great age of mercantilism, the English people remade themselves from a disparate group of individuals and localities divided by feudal loyalties, dialects and even languages, into an imperial power. Examining literature, art and social life, and returning to ground first explored by Raymond Williams in his seminal work, The Country and the City Revisited traces this transformation. It shows that what Williams figured as an urban-rural dichotomy can now be more satisfactorily grasped as a permeable boundary. While the movement of sugar, tobacco and tea became ever more deeply interfused with the movement of people, through migration and the slave trade, these commodities initiated new conceptions of space, time and identity. Spanning the traditional periods of the Renaissance and Romanticism, this collection of essays offers exciting interdisciplinary perspectives on central issues of early modern English history.

Books By Author Gerald MacLean
Britain and the Islamic World, 1558-1713, Hardback (May 2011)
Explores the interactions between Britain and the Islamic world from 1558 to 1713, showing how much scholars, diplomats, traders, captives, travellers, clerics, and chroniclers were involved in developing and describing those interactions.
Looking East, Hardback (September 2007)
Looking East examines how English encounters with the Ottoman Empire helped shape national identities and imperial ambitions. Engagingly written in an accessible style, this book demonstrates how the so-called 'conflict of civilizations' separating the Muslim East from the Christian West is a false and dangerous myth.
Re-Orienting the Renaissance, Hardback (October 2005)
Explores how the Renaissance entailed a global exchange of goods, skills and ideas between East and West. The authors interrogate what may seem to be settled certainties, such as the difference between East and West, the conflict between Islam and Christianity, and the 'rebirth' of European civilization in classical Greece and Imperial Rome.
