Crash Controversy by Martin Barker
Book DescriptionBetween 1996-97 an almost unprecedented campaign was mounted in the British press against David Cronenberg's film Crash. The year-long campaign went to extremes to try to get the film banned (where it still is, in the London borough of Westminster, despite being on sale in video shops in the vicinity). What motivated this campaign and what does it tell us about British film culture? Drawing on an investigation funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, The Crash Controversy offers a series of important and challenging findings. Between 1996-97 an almost unprecedented campaign was mounted in the British press against David Cronenberg's film of JG Ballard's notorious novel Crash. The year-long campaign went to extremes to try to get the film banned (where it still is, in the London borough of Westminster, despite being on sale in video shops in the vicinity). What motivated this campaign and what does it tell us about British film culture? What impact did the campaign have on general audiences? And with all those claims of corruption and depravity, what did ordinary viewers have to say about Crash? Drawing on an investigation funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, The Crash Controversy offers a series of important and challenging findings and is a major contribution to our understanding of censorship campaigns.

Live to Your Local Cinema, Hardback (October 2012)
The digital broadcasting of performances to cinemas, or 'livecasting', burst onto the world scene in 2006. This book explores the reasons for its rise, examines the aesthetics of filming theatre and opera performances, and explores who the audiences are and what they want.
Contemporary Hollywood Stardom, Hardback (July 2003)» View all books by Martin Barker
