Culloden by John Sadler
Book DescriptionThis is a book about a battle, about the events that took place amidst the showers of sleet on that grim day Wednesday 16 April 1746, the last pitched battle to be fought on British soil, as 5,400 men of the Scottish Highland army fought 8,000 British army regulars. Not only did it mark the final ruin of the Jacobite cause that had erupted sporadically since the ousting of James II of England and VII of Scotland in 1689, it also witnessed the bitter death knell of the Highland clans. The book tells the story of the people who fought there, how they came to stand as they did on that snowy heath, what motivated them and who led them there. It is also an account of what happened on the day, a minute-by-minute chronicle of Britain's last battle and one of her bloodiest, relying on the writer's intimate knowledge of the field itself, of the armies, the commanders and the logistics that placed them there. The account draws heavily on contemporary source material, some of which has not received a full airing in the past. This is the most up-to-date narrative history of this famous Scottish battle. Paperback publication timed to co-inside with the opening of the GBP 7.8 million pound visitor centre in September 2008. It has full-page feature in "The Scottish Daily Mail" in the week of publication. It presents major reviews in the Scottish national daily and Sunday newspapers to include "The Sunday Post", "The Scotsman", "Scotland on Sunday" and "The Herald".
