Descartes' Baby by Paul Bloom

Book Description

All humans see the world in two fundamentally different ways: even babies have a rich understanding of both the physical and social worlds. They expect objects to obey principles of physics, and they're startled when things disappear or defy gravity. Yet they can also read emotions and respond with anger, sympathy, and joy.In Descartes' Baby, Bloom draws on a wealth of scientific discoveries to show how these two ways of knowing give rise to such uniquely human traits as humor, disgust, religion, art, and morality. How our dualist perspective, developed throughout our lives, profoundly influences our thoughts, feelings, and actions is the subject of this richly rewarding book.

Against Empathy by Paul Bloom Against Empathy, Hardback (February 2017)

We think of empathy as the ultimate source of all good behaviour. But while it inspires care and protection in personal relationships, it has the opposite effect in the wider world. The author demonstrates with experiments, and case studies, that when faced with moral decisions, we must choose reason and compassion, not empathy, as our guides.

How Pleasure Works by Paul Bloom How Pleasure Works, Paperback (September 2011)

"Engaging, evocative... [Bloom] is a supple, clear writer, and his parade of counterintuitive claims about pleasure is beguiling."-NPR

Descartes' Baby by Paul Bloom Descartes' Baby, Paperback (July 2005)

Why is a forgery worth so much less than an original work of art? What's so funny about someone slipping on a banana peel? This work answers such questions, and other questions regarding human traits as art, humour, disgust, and morality. Presenting an account of human nature, it contends that we all see the world in terms of bodies and souls.
