UK Kirkus Review » Look at London's violent history and it's a wonder our capital city is still standing at all. The trouble began in AD61 when Queen Boudicca marched on the Romans' most prized possession, then only 11 years old, and burned it to the ground. The centuries that followed featured plagues, floods, accidents, storms and enemy action, not least of which was the Blitz of the early 1940s. At various points in history it has seemed that London has been cursed, yet throughout it all the indomitability of its people has raised the city up again and today it flourishes more strongly than ever. Withington's book focuses not only on well-known disasters such as the Great Plague of 1665 and the Blitz, but also on largely-forgotten events such as whirlwinds, earthquakes and acts of terrorism. Withington celebrates the Londoners' spirit while chronicling a truly remarkable account of calamaties to have hit our capital.(Kirkus UK)
