Divided Allegiance by Elizabeth Moon
Book DescriptionOnce a sheepfarmer's daughter, now a seasoned veteran, Paksenarrion has proved herself a formidable fighter. Years with Duke Phelan's company have taught her weaponry, discipline, and how to react as part of a military unit. Now, though, Paks feels spurred to a solitary destiny. Against the odds she is accepted as a paladin-candidate by the Fellowship of Gird. Years of study will follow, for a paladin must be versed in diplomacy and magic as well as the fighting arts. But, before she is fully trained, Paks is called to her first mission: to seek out the fabled stronghold of Luap. The way is long, the dangers many - and no one knows whether she will find glory or ruin.

The penultimate volume in this epic fantasy of elves, dragons and kingdoms under threat, from fantasy legend and Nebula Award-winning author Elizabeth Moon
UK Kirkus Review » Early in her career, Moon began The Deed of Paksennarion, one of the better fantasy trilogies of the late 1980s. Divided Allegiance is the second book in this trilogy - the others being Sheepfarmer's Daughter and the forthcoming Oath of Gold. Paks is a young and ambitious warrior, disillusioned with the blood and treachery of mercenary campaigns and looking for something better to do with her life. Moon has some sense of soldiering and the sheer hard work involved; her heroine is attractively fallible and is allowed to fail and be seriously traumatized by failing. No elegant prose here, but an appealing sense of the sadness of things. (Kirkus UK)
