Dog Called Perth by Peter Martin
Book DescriptionThe moving true story of Perth the beagle. 'Perth was a dog larger than life. She bought us adventure, drama and joy. She changed us forever.' From the instant they spotted the forlorn puppy in the kennel, Cindy and Peter Martin knew she was the one for them. Refusing to remain a mere pet, Perth becomes an adored member of the household - fiercely loyal, impossibly intelligent and totally trusting. The Martins swear to always let Perth run free, and she becomes an indefatigable explorer with an infallible compass. From the woods and lakes of upstate New York and her incredible survival in the wilderness of Vermont to her later adventures in the English countryside, Perth rewards the Martins with unshakable trust and unstinting love. This is an entertaining, beautifully written homage to a very special canine heroine that will bring tears to the eyes of dog lovers everywhere.

UK Kirkus Review » Peter and Cindy Martin owned a beautiful beagle called Perth from the time she was a puppy until her death at the age of 21. From the beginning Perth was treated almost as a human. She was included in conversations, she was 'taught' to cross the road so that she could run free without having to worry about being hit by vehicles. When Peter and Cindy move house, Perth makes friends with another dog, Sam. But Sam wasn't taught how to cross the road. And before long, Sam gets hit by a vehicle and has to be put down. Wasn't it a good job that Perth knew how to cross the road without getting hit? A Dog Called Perth is full of charming little stories like this, charting the life of Perth from her origins in America to her end in England via Canada and Scotland. Peter and Cindy obviously see themselves as the ideal owners. But surely ideal owners wouldn't leave their dog at a summer camp for girls whilst they go to England for a few months, without telling the camp leader (who they don't know) that the dog in question has a history of biting strangers? Nor would the ideal owners blame the camp leader for passing the dog onto a farm because the camp leader becomes concerned when the dog starts snapping at the girls. And when the dog runs away from the farm, these ideal owners decide to stay in England for another couple of months because changing their flights to come home earlier would cost money. There are some nice moments in this book, and anyone who owns a beagle will recognize and smile over many aspects of Perth's behaviour, but ultimately the owners' self-satisfaction is just too grating.
