Edge of Pleasure by Philippa Stockley

Book Description

'On his forty-second birthday, Gilver Memmer woke up and realised he had slept for over ten years.' As a small child, Gilver was a precocious talent. At ten, he had worked out the connection between the possession of artistic skill and the granting of sexual favours. By the time he was twenty-eight he was fabulously rich, with the world, especially women, at his feet. Life becomes so accommodating he forgets to bother doing the thing that brought him his fame. Year after year it seems to make no difference to his success. Then, within the space of a few short weeks, his money dries up, his house burns down and drink becomes his new best friend. Suddenly, Gilver is ready and desperate to swap his reputation for redemption. The question is, where to find it? In sweet, caring, besotted Alice, Gilver might have his answer. But Alice's best friend Juliette is equally caught up in the painter, and the dark secrets she holds threatens to destroy him ...Reminiscent of a young Beryl Bainbridge or Muriel Spark, The Edge of Pleasure is a stylish first novel from a wonderful new writing talent.

Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » In this debut novel set against the background of contemporary Notting Hill in London, Stockley skilfully creates a simple yet enthralling story of love, happiness and success, and the impact that each has upon the other. When success is hard fought, it is highly prized. For Gilver Memmer, however, it comes early and easily, and consequently holds little value. A gifted artist, his paintings sell for extravagant prices, making him both wealthy and arrogant. Without the maturity to deal with this success, Gilver's life becomes one big party. In his fantastic house with lavish furnishings he plays host to endless parties, leaving himself with little time or desire to paint. But the good times soon run their course. An absence of new paintings brings an end to the cashflow and lavish lifestyle, and when his house and possessions are destroyed in an accident, the once-feted artist finds himself alone. Bankrupt, friendless and increasingly frustrated by his artistic block, he finds himself seeking solace in alcohol as his life spirals into destruction. The graphic description of Gilver as he descends from success into ruin is merely one element of this emotive story. Stockley's inherent skill is in her ability to portray the powerful emotions of the young artist as he painfully recognizes his own mistakes and begins to understand the value of love and true friendship. By stripping his life to the bare essentials Gilver discovers his real gift as an artist, and he can finally begin to rebuild his life. This is a well-written and thoughtful novel which movingly examines what is important in life. (Kirkus UK)
