Elephant Alert by Jackie French

Leo thinks he's an ordinary kid, but he isn't - he can talk to animals and his best friend's a guinea pig! Mozz knows she's anything but ordinary. She's cool and clever, lives in a mansion with her mad scientist grandmother, and she soars through the sky in a rocket - the SkyTiger - saving wild animals around the world! Together, with the SkyTiger ready to take off, Leo and Mozz make an unstoppable animal rescue force. When Mozz convinces Leo to help her save the Puloa Gajah (Elephant Island) elephants from an incoming tsunami, she knows they're in with a fighting chance. But when the elephants won't listen to Leo's warnings, Leo and the animals find they're all in danger!

Book Review: Elephant Alert by Jackie French - Reviewed by (24 Feb 2012)

Young primary school readers will find it hard to resist this new ‘Animal Rescue’ series, as it features a modern-day version of Dr Dolittle in the form of a boy named Leo, who can speak ‘animal’. Leo’s unique linguistic abilities bring him to the attention of a mad-scientist grandmother, Dr Drizzsock, and her granddaughter, Mozz (named after the most dangerous creature in the world, the mosquito). Jackie French manages to sneak in environmental messages in various ways and not only about the protection of vulnerable animals. Mozz’s jet that she uses to fly to the aid of distressed creatures is made out of soft-drink bottles and runs on recycled garbage (50 banana peels per kilometre). Elephant Rescue is pure escapist...
