Evolution of the Polynesian Chiefdoms by Patrick Vinton Kirch
Book DescriptionThis is an archaeological perspective on the elaborate system of chiefdoms found in the islands of Polynesia. While the growth and development of complex social and political systems in this region have long interested anthropologists and ethnographers, the islands' rich sources of archaeological data have since been exploited. The author combines this fresh archaeological data with comparative ethnographic and linguistic materials to present an innovative and perceptive account of the processes of culture change in the islands over three millennia. Using comparative ethnography, lexical reconstruction and direct archaeological evidence, the author reconstructs the broad outlines of Ancestral Polynesian Society, from which the diverse societies of the Polynesian region descended. Major processes of cultural change are analysed in detail, including colonization, adaptation to changing environments, development of intensive production and social conflict and competition.

Shark Going Inland is My Chief, Hardback (July 2012)
Tracing the origins of the Hawaiians and other Polynesians back to the shores of the South China Sea, this title follows their voyages of discovery across the Pacific and presents the history of Hawaiian culture from about one thousand years ago.
How Chiefs Became Kings, Hardback (December 2010)
Addresses a central problem in anthropological archaeology: the emergence of "archaic states" whose distinctive feature was divine kingship. In this title, the author takes as his focus the Hawaiian archipelago, commonly regarded as the archetype of a complex chiefdom.
Island Societies, Paperback (March 2009)
The evolution of complex Oceanic chiefdoms into something very much like classic 'archaic states', are authoritatively surveyed here.

Where did the Pacific Islanders come from? How did they discover and settle the thousands of islands? Why did they build great monuments like Nan Madol on Pohnpei Island in Micronesia or the famous Easter Island statues? This book provides a synthesis of archaeological and historical anthropological knowledge of these indigenous cultures.
