When a new baby is born it's difficult to tell if it will grow up to be big or small or brave or scared of the dark and spiders. Sometimes babies get the wrong name. It's the same with dogs. So when the Claybourne-Willments, who should have been called the Smiths, got Fearless as a little puppy, it seemed a good name for him. Except Fearless wasn't. Colin Thompson’s latest picture book is a sweet and humorous story of a scary-looking bulldog called Fearless. However, Fearless is really a friendly scaredy-dog. People cross the road when they have to walk past him--with his thick, muscled bulldog body, docked tail and his meaty jaws with sharp teeth bared. This makes Fearless confused and sad because ‘he was really just smiling hello’. When a burglar breaks into the house, Fearless takes a chance to prove himself. The detailed illustrations are not at all like Thompson’s more surreal recent publications, The Big Little Book of Happy Sadness and Free to a Good Home, but are perfect for this story. Illustrator Sarah Davis really brings out the endearing Fearless--so expressive and realistic. The family are hilarious in their reactions to Fearless’ fright and I particularly loved the image of the shadows of all the things that Fearless should protect his family from--all the creepy crawlies and monsters of our imaginations are there. Fearless teaches us about being brave when it counts and how appearances can be deceiving. Great book for ages two plus, to be read aloud. Will be enjoyable to adults and older children also.
