Flashing Steel by Masayuki Shimabukuro

Book Description

Throughout the book, the authors refer to the art of iaijutsu, rather than the more common equivalent term iaido, in order to emphasize how unique Eishin-Ryu Iaijutsu is among the various schools of iaijutsu. The distinctions of Eishin-Ryu from similar styles are more often a measure of battlefield effectiveness than variations in aesthetic qualities which makes this title valuable to both Eishin-Ryu and other schools. Iaijutsu is the art of samurai swordsmanship in self-defence. Iaijutsu is distinguished from kenjutsu (the samurai sword employed in attack) by the fact that the practitioner begins each technique with the sword sheathed. By its nature, then, iaijutsu has many similarities to "internal" martial arts. The essence of the art is mental preparation and discipline. Iaijutsu, literally translated, means "the art of remaining face-to-face" and, since there are no wounding or restraining techniques with the samurai sword, it is tacitly the art of remaining face-to-face with death. Philosophically, this consciousness of the imminence of death creates a recognition of the preciousness of life, and forms the foundation for living life to its fullest - focusing on what is truly important. Respect for life and dignity, personal discipline, and a propensity for action thus become second nature to the iaijutsu practitioner.
