Flora Graeca Story by H. Walter Lack

Book Description

This is the first scholarly treatise that tells the remarkable story behind the making of the Flora Graeca, the monumental collection of illustrations and descriptions of plants in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. First described by Dioskorides in the sixth century, the flora and fauna of the Levant was neglected until the gentlemen botanists-naturalists John Sibthorp and John Hawkins, accompanied by illustrator Ferdinand Bauer, travelled there. Bauer produced a class of paintings superior to anthing of their kind in existence then, and his work was to become one of the most valuable treasures of the University of Oxford. Based on the original diaries, letters, and specimens, this fine work is illustrated with the original illustrations which are still housed at the Department of Plant Sciences there.

Redoute. Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers by H. Walter Lack Redoute. Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers, Hardback (June 2015)

Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) devoted himself exclusively to the task of capturing the diversity of the flowering plants in naturalistic watercolor paintings. He worked in Paris as a botanical illustrator for rich patrons for nearly half a century, during which he documented remarkable, rare plants and flora new to the science of his day.

Martius. The Book of Palms by H. Walter Lack Martius. The Book of Palms, Hardback (February 2015)

This encyclopedic treasury of 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations was based on Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius's expeditions through Brazil and Peru. The result was an unrivaled catalog of all known genera of the palm family, describing all the palms of Brazil, and producing the first maps of palm biogeography.
