For Bread with Butter by Ewa Morawska

Book Description

Fifty years ago, enactment of the Wagner National Labor Relations Act gave American organized labour what it has regarded ever since as one of its greatest assets: a legislative guarantee of the right of workers to organize and bargain collectively. Yet although the Wagner Act's guarantees remain substantially unaltered, organized labour in America today is in deep decline. Addressing this apparent paradox, Christopher Tomlins offers here a critical examination of the impact of the National Labor Relations Act on American unions. By studying the intentions and goals of policy makers in the context of the development of labour law from the late nineteenth century, and by looking carefully at the course of labour history since the act's passage, Dr Tomlins shows how public policy has been shaped to confine labour's role in the American economy, and that many of the unions' problems stem from the laws which purport to protect them.

Sociology of Immigration by Ewa Morawska Sociology of Immigration, Hardback (August 2009)

This book proposes a new theoretical framework for the study of immigration. It examines four major issues informing current sociological studies of immigration: mechanisms and effects of international migration, processes of immigrants' assimilation and transnational engagements, and the adaptation patterns of the second generation.

'For Bread with Butter' by Ewa Morawska 'For Bread with Butter', Paperback (January 2004)

Tomlins offers here a critical examination of the impact of the National Labor Relations Act on American unions.

Toward Assimilation and Citizenship by Ewa Morawska Toward Assimilation and Citizenship, Hardback (December 2002)

There is a new trend in immigration studies, which one could characterize as a turn away from multicultural and post-national perspectives, toward a renewed emphasis on assimilation and citizenship. This book considers this by looking at both state policies and migrant practices.

Insecure Prosperity by Ewa Morawska Insecure Prosperity, Paperback (April 1999)

Presents the story of the Jewish community in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This work reveals a pattern of adaptation to American life surprisingly different from that followed by Jewish immigrants to metropolitan areas. It presents an examination of Jewish life in the Eastern European regions from which most of Johnstown's immigrants came.
