Praised by authors as different as Martina Cole and Jeffery Deaver, Mandasue Heller is a phenomenon. This story - set in Manchester - is about a normal girl who finds herself in the power of a man who's pure evil, with no one to save her but herself.
UK Kirkus Review » This is Heller's second crime thriller, darker and grittier than her first, with undertones of horror and the occult. It, too, is set in the back streets of Manchester's Moss Side - an area where the writer herself has lived, and which she vividly brings to life. There's a psychopathic killer on the loose who is targeting local prostitutes. Each fresh victim has her abdomen slashed and the 'gift' of a forget-me-not flower placed in the bloody entrails. Even the experienced DI Seddon, in charge of the investigation, is appalled, even more so when a young schoolgirl is found dead after casual sex with a couple of lads she knows and shocking events follow. 12-year-old Lisa Noone, a friend of the dead girl, isn't easily scared, but even she starts to look over her shoulder, especially as her mother, Pat, is a prostitute in trouble with the police. Vulnerable after falling out with her best friend over a boy they both fancy, Lisa becomes fascinated with the strange but good-looking Benny after he rescues her from some rough treatment outside a youth club. All she can think of is a romantic escape from the sordid life she's used to - but Benny has quite another purpose in mind. Lisa increasingly endangers not only herself but also her mother. When Pat is viciously attacked, her most regular punter, Samir Rashid, risks exposure of his dirtiest business deals and secrets. Heller (who has written scripts for ITV's The Bill) goes into territory where many writers would fear to tread - mental patients at large in the community, the under-age marriage import market and Internet pornography - with courage and no illusions. She builds suspense and handles a wide network of characters with consummate ease. Lisa and Pat are particularly memorable, needing all the toughness they can muster to survive terrifying ordeals. Heller sets out to disturb her readers and in this she succeeds. Not a bedtime read, if you want to avoid nightmares. (Kirkus UK)
