UK Kirkus Review » When the Scottish clans go to war against each other they don't pull any punches. That was certainly true in perhaps the most bitter feud of all time between the Stewarts and the Douglases - two families who each coveted the throne and total control north of the border. Yet from the start it was an unlikely scenario, as both families came not from Scotland but from Flanders where they figured only among the minor nobility. It was on setting down Scottish roots that the trouble began, and though it was the Stewarts who went on to seize not only the throne of Scotland but also that of England and the British Empire, the Douglases wielded enormous power in the background. Blackguards abounded on both sides and skullduggery became commonplace - yet there were also some friendships between individual members of the opposing clans that showed in selfless acts at times of crisis. Oliver Thomson has written an entertaining and compelling book that shows this part of Scottish history in all its bloody glory. (Kirkus UK)
