From the End of the Peloponnesian War to the Battle of Ipsus by Phillip Harding

Book Description

The second volume of Translated Documents of Greece and Rome is a collection of English translations with commentary and bibliography, ancient and modern, of the major inscriptions and historical fragments relating to the history of Greece in the fourth century BC. The book is designed to supplement existing translations of the extant historical works of the period, so that the student who knows neither Greek nor Latin can study the fourth century in greater depth than has previously been possible. The period covered by this collection includes the restoration of the democracy at Athens in 403/2, the creation of the Second Athenian Naval League, the Theban hegemony, the Sacred and Social Wars, the rise of Philip of Macedon, the career of his son Alexander, the Lamian War and, finally, the first rounds of the battle for the succession. There are documents from places as far apart as Priene and Tegea, but the majority come from Athens. This collection includes such material as alliances and peace treaties, honorific decrees, catalogues of temple deposits and naval equipment, laws, accounts, dedications, legal decisions, royal correspondence, constitutions and some important fragments of narrative histories. This book will be welcomed by teachers and students of ancient history.

British Shell Shortage of the First World War by Phillip Harding British Shell Shortage of the First World War, Hardback (June 2015)

The shortage of munitions during WWI increased the level of casualties; prevented the breakthrough of the German defences thus continuing a war of attrition. The political and military casualties are explained, along with the innovative Munitions Ministry, which led the way for industrial conscription, ensuring that the whole country was in gear.

Story of Athens by Phillip Harding Story of Athens, Paperback (June 2007)

Presents the English translations of the six Athenian writers known as the Atthidographos. This title examines these historical writers' work - in chronological order - and how these writings, dating from the fifth and fourth century BC, reveal a wealth of information about early Athenian history, legend, religion, customs and anecdotes.

Didymous on Demosthenes by Phillip Harding Didymous on Demosthenes, Hardback (April 2006)

The first-century BC Alexandrian scholar Didymos was nicknamed 'Bronze-guts' for his prolific output. But, his work survived in marginalia until 1901, when a papyrus containing part of his commentary on some speeches of the Greek orator-politician Demosthenes came to light. This edition provides the text, a facing translation, and an introduction.
