From the Outer World by Oscar Handlin
Book DescriptionNew "voyagers" in the 20th century, from Asia, Africa, Australia, and Latin America, record their experiences in the United States. The narratives of the non-Europeans do not differ dramatically from those of their predecessors, but clearly reflect the circumstances of their composition, as well as the political prejudices of the author. These literary products have earned far less attention than those of the English, French, Germans, and Russians, and this volume aims to redress the balance. The earliest of the travel accounts is from Rabindranath Tagore in 1924, and the most recent is from V.S. Naipaul in 1989. Many accounts are newly translated from Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, and Spanish. These writers have noted the repercussions of unsettled lives, perceived class differences, contention regarding the position of women, and many other issues of concern.

Truth in History, Paperback (April 1981)» View all books by Oscar Handlin
A professional critique of the tendency in academic scholarship to prove worth, which becomes relevance and which in turn is interpreted as a search not for truth but political correctness.
