UK Kirkus Review » Both an enthusiast and a garden historian, Roy Strong is devoted to his walled Herefordshire garden The Laskett. From this tranquil spot he has penned, over the last twenty years, articles on compost and bulb catalogues as well as composing features on the more intellectual, even spiritual, aspects of gardening: river gods, colour and whether the formal garden is akin to verse. Strong is the author of a host of books on the history of art, and the former director of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Throughout Garden Party he employs his exhaustive knowledge lightly, writing with the ready charm of the true enthusiast. The Renaissance scholar Eugenio Battisti described the garden as 'a theatre for imitation, competing with nature on nature's terms and conditions' and the human love affair with barely controlled vegetation continues. Strong roams from the Boboli Gardens in Italy to Derek Jarmen's windswept garden in the shadow of Dungeness celebrating as he goes the combination of aesthetics, practical skill and chance that is gardening.
