George III's Children by John Van der Kiste
Book DescriptionThe eldest of King George III's children, who became Prince Regent and King George IV, is less remembered for his patronage of the arts than for his extravagance and maltreatment of his wife. This objective portrayal of the royal family draws upon sources to lay to rest the gossip and exaggeration.

UK Kirkus Review » George III was the 'mad monarch', as everyone knows, and this book shows his children could be a pretty odd bunch too. From Prince George who indulged in gluttony and stupefying extravagance, to Prince William who would on becoming King have himself driven around London so he could shout at passers-by, they were colourful characters who helped define the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The family was enormous even by the standards of the time - 15 children, all but two of whom reached maturity. Recent historians have tended to focus on the family's weaknesses rather than their strengths, but Van Der Kiste puts that right. He describes the family, and those surrounding them, in a way that brings the strong personalities to life and shows their many qualities. The book is delightfully illustrated with plates and caricatures, and contains the only known photograph of a child of George III. (Kirkus UK)
