Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » The long awaited second novel from the prize-winning author of A Native Speaker, this is a haunting exploration of the Japanese experience of World War II. Born in Korea and raised in Japan, Franklin Hata moves to Bedleyville, America where he lives a life of gestures and politeness to try and assimilate into the local community. However, beneath Franklin's self control lurks the horror and guilt of his past as a medic in the Japanese army. This novel looks at the way outsiders feel they have to conform in order to survive and the price they pay for their conformity. It is also a story of how unforgiving the present is to the past. Franklin's inability to translate the gestures of humanity into real emotion is painfully exposed and becomes a memorable metaphor. (Kirkus UK)
