Globalisation and the Changing Role of State by Rumki Basu
Book DescriptionIs globalisation a force for economic growth, prosperity and democratic freedom? Or is it a force for the exploitation of the developing world and suppression of human rights? Globalisation has opened up unparalleled new opportunities for economic and social development. But at the same time it has posed major threats to human security and human freedom. What this book addresses is this complexity of globalisation, its issues and impacts and lastly its relation with state and political power. In the four sections, sixteen articles and an introduction, the myriad faces of globalisation are explored and investigated. The first section look, at globalisation and its impact on the nation-state and the issues of sovereignty. It also examines the globalisation ideology/political economy interface and the resultant impacts, issues and transformations in the society, economy and political processes. The second section looks at the evolving idea of a New World Order, issues of nuclearisation, global conflict and co-operation, besides the impacts of globalism on cultures and identities. The third section explores the impact of globalisation on human rights theory and practice, and the impact of international global covenants on human rights implementation in India. The last section is India-specific, wherein globalisation and its impact on centre-state relations, democracy and development, public administration and civil society interrelationships are discussed separately.
