2 star rating by Boomert - The Greatest Blogger in the World by Andrew McDonald 13 Jan 2010
Charlie enters a competition to be the greatest blogger in the world. His pet duck, Barcode, doesn’t do enough to keep the blog interesting so Charlie starts blogging some things that he shouldn’t. His disloyalty to ‘bestie’, Phattius, causes repercussions and he also keeps trying to kiss ‘the Boots’, an intelligent girl who is the teacher’s pet. Charlie doesn’t want her, or anyone, to find out how clever he really is. The characters and their motives are the weakest feature of this book. We don’t get a strong enough sense of who they are and how this drives their actions. Why, for example, does Charlie’s mother care so much about the Truck Food Company and not about her family? This story, however, is intended to be a light, humorous read. Interesting inclusions are the Hollow Tree Full of Leaves, a hideout in the playground; the zoetropes that Phattius sells; and the incorporation of blogs into the text. This last innovative device is the clearly the book’s strength. Boys in primary school are the target readers.
