Atlantis by Geoffrey Ashe Atlantis, Paperback (September 2012)

Atlantis, the island continent that vanished under the sea, is one of the most haunting themes of legend. It has preoccupied thinkers for more than two thousand years, from Plato to Rudolf Steiner. This title focuses on art, archetypes, cosmology and sacred traditions.

Examines ancient myths, theology, history, literature and feminine spirituality to throw light on the role of Mary in Church, which is only partly derived from the Gospels.

UK Kirkus Review » In the 1760s horrid rumours spread through Berkshire about scandalous events at Medmenham Abbey, where Sir Francis Dashwood, an eccentric English peer, was said to hold regular orgies in a series of specially constructed caves. Here, members of Dashwood's Hell-fire Club, disguised as monks and nuns, engaged in enthusiastic Devil-worship, which required sexual deviation of the most enthusiastic kind. The author uses the incidents at Medmenham Abbey (which alas, are far less scandalous than one might suspect) on which to hang an examination of libertarian philosophies from Rabelais to Aleister Crowley and Charles Manson. First published in 1974, the book is occasionally out of kilter with recent views, but it remains an interesting and thought-provoking study. (Kirkus UK)
