Historic Inns Along the River Thames by Roger Long
Book DescriptionRoger Long's new book, the first on the subject, covers numerous historic hostelries along the Thames. Over sixty inns are featured here, with potted histories, illustrations and directions on how to find them. The book begins in the capital and wends its way along the course of the river, eventually working its way back to the source. None of the inns mentioned here are more than a stone's throw from the waterside. This is a book of allegedly true tales. There are romantic accounts concerning authors, poets and artists, a couple of horrific murders, several hauntings, courageous legends of heroes and comical stories. Colourful anecdotes about charismatic landlords, tales of highwaymen and love stories concerning eloping landlords' daughters also feature, along with historical accounts of royal patronages and Jerome K. Jerome gets a mention with his famous tale of "Three Men in a Boat". A fascinating journey, with plenty of refreshment stops along the way, this will appeal to anyone with an interest in local and social history, and to those who just like a quiet pint in characterful surroundings.
