Holy Concord within Sacred Walls by Colleen Reardon

Book Description

This volume examines musical culture both inside and outside seventeenth-century Sienese convents. In contrast to earlier studies of Italian convent music, this book draws upon archival sources to reconstruct an ecclesiastical culture that celebrated music internally and shared music freely with the community outside convent walls. Colleen Reardon argues that cloistered women in Siena enjoyed a significant degree of freedom to engage in musical pursuits. The nuns produced a remarkable body of work including motets, lamentations, theatrical plays and even an opera. As a result, the convent became an important cultural centre in Siena that enjoyed the support and encouragement of its clergy and lay community.

Sociable Moment by Colleen Reardon Sociable Moment, Hardback (July 2016)

A Sociable Moment is the first book to examine the rise of opera in Siena during the Baroque. It focuses both on opera as a manifestation of civic self-fashioning and sociability, especially in pastoral works promoted by the expatriate Chigi family, and opera as business under the impresario Girolamo Gigli.

Agostino Agazzari and Music at Siena Cathedral, 1597-1641 by Colleen Reardon Agostino Agazzari and Music at Siena Cathedral, 1597-1641, Hardback (December 1993)

Agazzari was a prominent theorist of the early Baroque, responsible for an important treatise on basso continuo in 1607. He was also a composer of some significance. This study of his life and times opens a window on the musical culture of Siena during the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
