3 star rating by Boomert - Hostage by Karen Tayleur 13 Jan 2010
This is the second YA novel from Karen Tayleur (her first, the successful Chasing Boys). Protagonist Tully is abducted from a chemist shop on Christmas Eve. This leads to an exploration of the events that led to her being taken hostage, a rediscovery of places and people from her past, and a shift from silence and secrets to revelation. Tully is an unreliable narrator, and the layers and inconsistencies of her story are gradually revealed through flashbacks, a police interview and a chronological description of her abduction and the road trip she takes with her kidnapper. Some readers may struggle with the frequent changes in time, place, tense and voice (from young child to young adult), but others will enjoy piecing the puzzle together. Memory, interpretation and truth are key factors in Tully’s story. She is multifaceted and the events and people who shaped her are revealed effectively, but I would have liked more on the kidnapper. I read an unedited draft which had some plot elements to be refined (how did they get the car back on the road after the truck incident? Why was that part of the story?), but I’m sure these would be resolved before publication.
