House Sitter by Peter Lovesey
Book DescriptionThe identification of the woman found murdered on Whiteview Sands poses more questions than it answers. Emma Tysoe was a respected psychologist and an official criminal profiler with several successful cases to her credit. Why was she sun-bathing alone so far from home? How did she get there? Who is the mysterious 'Ken' in her private life? What was the murder weapon? Why did the man who noticed she was dead then completely disappear from the scene? When Peter Diamond is brought into the investigation he sheds some light on these matters - most importantly by discovering that she had been seconded under the greatest secrecy to work on the profile of the person who has assassinated one celebrity and is threatening to kill more. Are these killings connected to Emma's death? Diamond thinks so, but he cannot persuade his colleagues to agree with him, and even he cannot make all the pieces fit the jigsaw he's envisaged.

In 1879, race walking competitions, known as "wobbles," were all the rage. The death of a contender, followed by a second murder, introduces London's no-nonsence cop Sergeant Cribb who had a penchant for extreme sports.
UK Kirkus Review » Peter Lovesey is probably best known for his well-crafted Edwardian mysteries, but he is just as fluent when setting a conundrum in the present day. In the first chapter of this novel, the author demonstrates just how easy it is to commit a murder on a crowded beach, where everyone is preoccupied with their own concerns and trying to give their neighbours the same privacy they want for themselves. The victim proves to be a psychological profiler, engaged to assist the police in tracking the killer known as the Mariner, who has shot a film director with a crossbow and left a quotation from the Coleridge poem near the body. The Mariner has threatened a golf champion and a former pop singer. The police have moved them to safe houses while an urgent investigation is carried out. Before long, it becomes apparent that the two murders are connected, and officers from different forces are obliged to cooperate. The widowed DS Peter Diamond is able to work well with the cigar-smoking Hen Mallin, but they are both dubious about their colleague Jimmy Barneston, who seems to have been rather too close to the red-haired profiler in the days before her death. Many false trails are laid before the smoothly handled climax is reached. Like all of Lovesey's novels, The House Sitter is unsensational and avoids details perhaps best left to a pathology text book. Its emphasis is on characterization and the teasing out of the puzzle. Told with humour, the story is intricate yet believable, and will please readers who like a murder mystery to exercise the brain rather than to horrify. (Kirkus UK)
