How Not to Write a Novel by Sandra Newman
Book DescriptionDespite the abundance of writing how-to books, unpublished writers seem to repeat the same mistakes again and again, from making their protagonists into cooler versions of themselves to describing a character preparing and eating breakfast for fifteen pages. Unlike most writing books, this is not a point-by-point plot formula for success. Instead, by using humor combined with straightforward advice, this guide provides expert trouble-shooting that can be immediately put into practice to get any manuscript out of the slush pile and into the book stores.

Western Lit Survival Kit, Paperback (April 2012)
Why does most writing about the classics have words like 'seminal' or 'oeuvre' in it? What does postmodernism mean? Can I get away with just reading the introduction? This title guides you through the Western literary canon, century by century: from Ancient Greek drama to the modern novel, via Beowulf, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, and Proust.

Having escaped the madness of her adoptive family (mother Louise committing suicide at the seventh attempt, father Sheldon finding solace in an ever-growing porn collection) American-born Sandra Newman was living in the punk rock squalor of eighties London. She had made a new home in the cheerful Bohemian demi-monde of dreamers and anarchists.
