Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » Renowned for his un-fussy attitude and hands-on approach, Alan Titchmarsh is one of the most popular and authoritative horticulturists on television. In this book, the companion volume to his second series of How To Be a Gardener, he shares the secrets of designing and creating a garden. This is an ambitious plan, covering as it does all the familiar areas (cottage, formal, patio, natural, contemporary gardens, and many, many more) in a well-illustrated 300-odd pages. This limits some subjects to a few pages but covers all the essentials concisely without seeming cramped or hurried. He starts with choosing the type of garden you want, moves through making a plan and gives plenty of information about realizing your ideas. He includes many favourites such as decking, gravel, container gardens and water features, as well as some up-to-the-minute ideas like bog gardening and growing grasses. Among the high-quality photographs of gardens are some step-by-step sequences featuring the author carrying out garden tasks. Anyone familiar with Titchmarsh's voice and television presenting style will find that it translates well to the page - he has a great talent for giving facts and hints in a relaxed way without ever seeming dictatorial. This is an excellent book on making a garden for the inexperienced gardener. (Kirkus UK)
