In Search of an Impotent Man by Gaby Hauptman

Book Description

Carmen Legg, a tall sporty red-head, is fed up with men and their one-track minds. She is thirty something, drives her own BMW, lives in her own apartment and likes to run her own life the way she wants it. The book opens with a day when three men prompt her to take radical action. The first is a businessman who, at a seminar, can't take his eyes off her legs. The second is a business associate she has to tease at dinner to get him to make the deal she wants. And the third is the lover in her bed, who, on her return from an exhausting day, can't take no for an answer. What she needs, Carmen decides, is a man with higher things on his mind. So with her friend, an eighty-year-old neighbour with a dramatic past, she places a rather unusual advertisement...

Reviews

UK Kirkus Review » High-flying 30-something Carmen Legg has a problem: she is fed up with meeting men who are only out for sex. Solution? Ditch the current boyfriend and place a personal ad in the newspaper for a different kind of man, one who 'must be intelligent and impotent'. Surprisingly, her ploy works, and she is soon inundated with replies from suitors who, for one reason or another, are happy to court her by mail, by phone and in person. Carmen settles down happily in the comfort of her home to sift the replies into 'yes' and 'no' piles, and decide what action to take. First, she agrees to meet Stefan, an aristocratic type who whisks her off to his mansion but who is not what he seems; next, there's Frederic, a knight in shining armour; and then Oliver, who wants to sweep her off to New York; and Felix - and so it goes on, until she meets dishy David, the accidental applicant who threatens to steal her heart and her resolve. Meanwhile, a friendship she's struck up with Elvira, an elderly lady who lives in the same block of flats, leads to unexpected connections, and with the help of her best friend Laura and later a psychotherapist, Isabella, Carmen begins a tongue-in-cheek voyage of discovery which twists and turns like any good flick in this genre. The characters are cheekily and imaginatively sketched, and the punchy, precise dialogue and pacy plot hook the reader into the action, despite the flimsiness of the premise. The only sticking point is when Hauptmann digresses with an attempted dialogue about why men become impotent: fascinating enough in itself, but too jarring a gear shift in a book which runs solely on spark.
