Ingo Giezendanner/GRRRR by Ingo Giezendanner
Book DescriptionGiezendanner writes about his way of working: "His tools are paper, felt-tip pen, and white-out - the drawings are created on the spot." Some of the essential facts about Ingo Giezendanner alias GRR are contained in this seemingly lapidary sentence. GRR works with the most simple means - felt-tip pen, black-and-white. He works outdoors and "after nature." Moreover, he scans his drawings and layers them on his computer. After numerous publications, self-published or on the internet, and the book Seattle-San Francisco, published by Edition Andreas Zust in 1999, GRR has created a new book project on the city in which he lives and works most of the time. GRR8: Zurich starts on the green outskirts of the city, with views in painstaking detail of the borders of forests and parks, in which we gradually discover the signs of civilization. We then enter the hustle-bustle of the city, see familiar places, squatted houses or construction sites, and finally get up close to things like trash bags, a barbed-wire fence, the door knob of a tramway, or Sisley poster with "Ad-agency worms, fuck yourselves" scribbled across it. Although Giezendanner's drawings are so precise and naturalist that you could find each one of the places, these familiar views transformed to decidedly black-and-white felt-tip drawings seem strangely alien, sometimes seen with a lovingly ironic eye, but never cute.
